Hi, everybody! First of all, I would like to thank Haper Collins International for sending me this book which is, in fact, my first ARC (Advance Reader Copy). It may seem stupid, but reading a novel before it is even published for me is somehow a reward as a literary blogger. It is especial, because I feel as if I was actually working in a publishing house. Anyway, ignore my digression, I am not here to talk about ARCs, but to review Run the risk, the third part of the series 'On the edge'. I have not read the previous ones, the stories are independent, therefore, it is no big deal if you have not, either.
A book whose plot revolves around street gangs can be really interesting (usually for people who like to suffer with harsh stories), that is why I decided to read Run the risk. Would I say that it is its main theme? No, for most of the times what we are reading is Grace's everyday life as she works in the cinema, volunteers with little children (she has to pay the bills of the house) or recites poetry. It is true that she faces the Locos gang several times, but these episodes are rather brief and, in my opinion, are not that relevant. On the contrary, the love story between Mateo and Grace is the heart of the novel. I am mad for romance, but in this particular case I would have preferred to know more about the inside of the gang life and not only the aggressive-cool-façade of these boys; throughout the novel the author will provide us with small pieces of information regarding rules, betrayals, punishments... but I think she could have exploited 'the gang idea' far more. In the end, this element is what makes Run the risk different from the rest of contemporary YA romances. As an avid and curious reader, I need details and tons of information to be able to put myself in the characters' shoes.
Leaving aside that tiny aspect, overall I have enjoyed the book, especially because of the characters. All of them are round and have strenghts and weaknesses. On the one hand, Grace is not a wimp (thank God!). She is brave, unlike most of nowadays female protagonists, and I really sympathised with her. She tries to help everybody, while she is the one who is slowly cracking on the inside. Though Grace has lost her mum and a university scholarship due to his brother's sudden personality changes, she still fights to save him and does not want people to feel pity for her. Being so generous is a virtue that only very few have, and I must confess I felt completely identified with Grace's attitude here. Mateo, on the other hand, is a peculiar guy. He has a troubled past, he is the hot-type (strong, skilful, clever) but he is determined to fix things. Helping Alex and, meanwhile, spending time with Grace? This as an offer too good to turn down. However, do not take things for granted, because I am sure that some of his sentences will make your heart melt. In addition, Feenix is the best friend one could ever imagine. She is so spontaneous and lovable that you will feel you know her for ages. Not to mention her unique poems.
The book is thrilling, charged with unresolved sexual tension, yet the ending is too cliché and dramatic for me. Explosions, funny and approachable singers, near-death experiences... And once you realise what has happened the book has already ended. With a couple of extra pages I believe the story could have scored some more points but as I have said before, I have enjoyed the novel. If you like realistic and intense romances, with characters that have to fight tooth and nail to survive, Run the risk will satisfy your needs and will keep you on the edge.

¡Hola, mininos! Sí, lo sé, nunca había hecho una reseña en inglés en el blog pero como la editorial que me ha mandado este libro (Harper Collins) es inglesa, considero que es justo hacer la reseña en ambos idiomas. Se trata de un ARC, lo que significa que esta novela aún no se ha publicado, sale el día 11 de abril de este año. Me ha hecho mucha ilusión recibirlo, porque de algún modo si lees un ARC parece que realmente trabajas para una editorial. Y ya sabéis que eso es a lo que quiero dedicarme. Sin más dilación, aquí tenéis la reseña de Run the risk, la tercera parte de una serie (aunque se pueden leer de forma totalmente independiente).
Este es un libro que trata sobre las bandas callejeras, así que podéis imaginaros que algunas escenas que se describen son muy duras y violentas. A mí me gusta sufrir, por eso lo pedí. Sin embargo, ¿es el tema principal? Ni mucho menos, pues en su mayor parte acompañamos a Grace en su vida diaria: trabajando en el cine, como voluntaria con un grupo de niños (ella es la que tiene que pagar los gastos de los que su padre se desentiende) o recitando poesía. Sí que es verdad que se enfrenta a la banda Los locos un par de veces, pero estos episodios son bastante breves y no es que afecten de manera significativa a la trama. Por el contrario, el romance entre Grace y Mateo sí conforma el corazón de la novela. Me encanta este género, ya lo sabéis, pero en este caso en concreto me hubiese gustado saber más sobre la vida de los pandilleros, pues me dio la sensación de que la autora se quedó sólo en la superficie, en la idea de chicos malotes y peligrosos. A lo largo de la novela, Diepen nos proporciona pequeños detalles sobre las reglas, las traiciones o los castigos de las bandas... pero creo que la idea podría haber dado muchísimo más de sí. Al fin y al cabo, este elemento es el que hace diferente a Run the risk frente a otras novelas contemporáneas.
Dejando este pequeño aspecto a un lado, en general el libro me ha gustado bastante, especialmente por los personajes. No son planos, sino que tienen matices, personalidades dispares, y gozan tanto de virtudes como de defectos. Por un lado, Grace no es una pelele, y eso se agradece. Es valiente, sabe lo que quiere, y a pesar de haber perdido a su madre y su beca en la universidad por culpa de su hermano, quien comienza a frecuentar las bandas callejeras como su exnovio, Mateo, ella hace todo lo que está en su mano para salvarle. En ese sentido me ha recordado mucho a mí, pues por muy mal que estén las cosas siempre intento que los que están a mi alrededor no sufran. Por otro lado, Mateo puede parecer a simple vista el típico chico guaperas (musculoso, hábil, listo), pero ya veréis que poco a poco va revelando un lado muy tierno. Además, es muy peculiar y rompe uno de los prejuicios más extendidos en lo que se refiere a la virilidad masculina. Os lo prometo, hubo un par de escenas en las que lo que dijo él me llegó al corazón. No puedo olvidarme de Feenix, la amiga alocada que todos querríamos tener. Ella es genial, es tan espontánea que parece que la conoces de toda la vida y sus poemas... son únicos, ya lo veréis.
El libro está lleno de acción y se lee en seguida. Una de las cosas que más destaca es la tensión sexual no resuelta entre la pareja protagonista cuya relación, por cierto, se va construyendo desde cero y resulta creíble. No obstante, el final es precipitado y demasiado dramático y cliché, en mi opinión. Explosiones, famosos amigables y divertidos, experiencias cercanas a la muerte... Me hubiese gustado que la autora se explayase un puñado de páginas más y crease un final más original, pero tampoco es el peor que he leído. Como ya he dicho anteriormente, Run the risk es una novela que he disfrutado mucho y que os encantará si os gustan las historias de amor salpimentadas con su buena dosis de peligro mortal.
