Hi, everybody! Today I am going to review a novel that I have liked a lot, especially because of the circus setting, and that I think you will enjoy if you liked Stephanie Garber's Caraval. It is an ARC copy that Entangled Publishing sent me (thank you so much!), so the book is not published yet. The release date is February, 2018. Since the publishing house started the publicity campaign this early I suppose that By a Charm and a Curse is one of the most anticipated novels of next year. Do you want to know more? This novel narrates the story of Emmaline King, a young girl who has just returned to Claremore (Oklahoma) to live some time with her father while her mother is investigating abroad. Emma feels a bit lost, she is trying to adapt to the new situation; thus, when she is told that Le Grand's Carnival Fantastic is in town she decides to go there with her old friend and have some fun. However, her visit ends up being an authentic nightmare. And the only one to blame is that charming circus boy. Of course, Emma could not know that Le Grand’s Carnival Fantastic is bound by a charm (its members never age or get hurt during their shows) and a curse. The worst part is that now that curse is her responsibility. Will Emma be able to escape from the circus or will she spend years and years as the new Girl in the Box? Is she capable of destroying somebody else’s life just to regain hers?

The main characters are Emma and Benjamin, the boy that works preparing the circus facilities and that, consequently, is also under the protection of the charm. From the very beginning we can see that Benjamin pities Emma and so he tries to help her; that is why it is not surprising at all that they start to feel things for each other –even though Ben’s mum forbids him to stay near the girl. Emma is dangerous, she cannot be trusted now that she is the one passing the circus curse, but Ben thinks differently. They will start knowing each other, sharing laughs, hobbies and secrets, and suddenly a powerful bond will tie them together. For Emma wishes she had never entered that cursed circus and Ben desires to run away from there soon. As you can imagine, their romance plays an essential part in the novel, but there is also the echo of another romance that gives this story a whole new dimension. This second romance is harder, more nostalgic… it is broken from the beginning and it has completely captivated me. Moreover, there are many other characters such as Whiskey, Duncan, Sydney o the Moretti brothers, all of them members of Le Grand’s Carnival Fantastic. One of my favourites, just because I really connected with him, was Sydney.

The first chapters from By a Charm and a Curse are simply addictive; I promise I could not stop reading since Emma met the Boy in the Box! Maybe after that the book slows a bit its pace –probably because I expected to find more magic among its pages-, but as I said before the two parallel romances kept me reading and reading. Furthermore, I wanted to clarify that this novel despite being a young adult moves away from the clichéd athletic-and-vain-male protagonist –in fact, Ben even wears glasses- and the so feared instalove. The characters are well-built, they have their virtues and flaws, but I believe they could have been more round. The ending is astonishingly bittersweet! I did not expect the author to be so tragic and I must admit I think it is a bit unfair for some characters, but… I am sure that the majority of readers will be okay with it.

Hoy os traigo la reseña de una novela que me ha gustado bastante, sobre todo por la ambientación circense, y que creo que puede interesaros a más de uno si os gustó Caraval (reseña aquí), por ejemplo. Se trata de un ARC que Entangled Publishing me ha enviado (¡mil gracias!), por lo que el libro aún no está disponible: se publicará en febrero de 2018. A juzgar por la rapidez de la editorial para empezar la campaña publicitaria y por el correo que me enviaron, puedo deducir que By a Charm and a Curse es uno de los títulos más esperados del año que viene. ¿Queréis saber más? ¡Pues quedaos a leer la reseña!

Esta novela nos cuenta la historia de Emmaline King, una joven que acaba de volver a Claremore (Oklahoma) para pasar una temporada con su padre mientras su madre está enfrascada en una importante investigación en el extranjero. Emma se siente un poco perdida, está tratando de adaptarse al cambio, de modo que cuando se entera de que Le Grand's Carnival Fantastic está en el pueblo decide ir a divertirse con su vieja amiga. Sin embargo, lo que le ocurre en ese circo se convierte en una auténtica pesadilla. Y todo por culpa de ese encantador chico circense. Por supuesto, Emma no podía saber que sobre Le Grand's Carnival Fantastic pesa una horrible maldición que, ahora, sin quererlo, es su responsabilidad. No todo es malo, pues a cambio de esta maldición los miembros del circo nunca envejecen ni sufren accidentes durante sus actuaciones. ¿Podrá Emma escapar del circo o pasará años encerrada como la nueva Chica de la Caja? ¿Será capaz de arruinarle la vida a otra persona como le hicieron a ella sólo para volver a ser normal?

Los personajes principales son Emma y Benjamin, un muchacho que trabaja arreglando las instalaciones del circo y que, por tanto, también está bajo la protección del encantamiento. Desde el primer momento podemos ver que Benjamin se compadece de Emma e intenta ayudarla, de modo que no es de extrañar que entre ellos empiecen a surgir sentimientos -por mucho que la madre de Ben le prohíba acercarse a ella. Emma es peligrosa, no se puede confiar en ella ahora que es la portadora de la maldición, pero Ben no opina lo mismo. Poco a poco irán conociéndose, compartiendo risas, aficiones y secretos, y eso hará que se cree un poderoso vínculo entre ellos dos. Porque Emma desearía no haber tenido que abandonar a su familia debido a la maldición del circo y porque Ben siente que ese no es su sitio y lleva tiempo deseando marcharse a toda costa. Como podéis imaginaros, el romance cobra mucha importancia en la novela pero no os dejéis engañar, pues no es sólo una historia de amor: existe el eco de otro romance que le da una dimensión nueva. Este segundo romance es más duro, mucho más nostálgico, está roto desde el principio y ha sido uno de los elementos que más me han cautivado de este libro. Asimismo, aparecen muchos más personajes, como Whiskey, Duncan, Sydney o los hermanos Moretti, todos ellos miembros de Le Grand's Carnival Fantastic. Uno de mis favoritos y creo que con el que más he conectado, sin duda, ha sido Sydney y es que su historia la viviremos muy de cerca gracias a la relación que tiene con Emma.

Los capítulos iniciales de By a Charm and a Curse son completamente adictivos; ¡no os podéis imaginar lo intrigada que estaba durante la visita de Emma al circo y su encuentro con el misterioso y atractivo chico circense! Puede que luego pierda un poco de fuerza porque yo esperaba encontrar más magia -la hay, aunque en muy pequeñas dosis-, pero como he dicho antes esa trama amorosa a cuatro voces la sentí muy real y me impedía dejar de leer. Además, me gustaría aclarar que esta novela, a pesar de ser juvenil, se aleja muchísimo del cliché de chico protagonista atlético y creído (Ben incluso lleva gafas) y del tan temido instalove. Los personajes están bien construidos, tienen sus virtudes y defectos, pero siento que podrían haber sido aún más redondos. El final es bastante agridulce, no me esperaba que la autora llevase la tragedia hasta ese punto y admito que me pareció un poco injusto lo que ocurre, pero es un buen final.

I was completely addicted to this book. The main character is a really tough one and that is super good. I am a bit tired of those female protagonists that claim to be strong and independent and then, when they should be capable enough to overcome a problem, they are -oh what a surprise- rescued by the hero. In this case, Alice does not need it. She is her own heroine. And I loved her for that. She is dangerously sincere and passionate, which might get her into some trouble but, again, she handles it. Or not, but she bears the consequences as a grown-up.

There is nothing more important to her than hockey, so when she is not accepted in the Chicago Falcons just because she is a girl, she decides that maybe it is time to give up. However, her twin brother, Xander, has had an accident and now he will not be able to play for the Falcons. He is going to miss this big opportunity to prove himself... that is why Alice suggests playing for him. As they are twins, people usually cannot differentiate them and this time will not be an exception. She cuts her hair, she puts a bandage on her breasts and there she goes. A new and actually more talented Xander Bell. Still, there is a problem: Hayden Tremblay. Alice never paid attention to sweaty boys; in fact, she is very used to beating them on the ice but Tremblay... She cannot ignore him.

What a loved the most about this book is the relationship between Al Bell (Alice dressed up as Xander) and Hayden, and also the powerful bond between the two twins. Al changes Hayden in ways I could not possibly had imagined. Their conversations are deep and heartfelt, and suddenly I realised that I loved the pair and I had totally forgotten about Alice as a girl. I laughed, I suffered and I smiled because of them, which is rather complicated if we take into account that Alice had to pretend she was a boy in order not to be discovered. Boys and girls have different codes and ways of speaking, so at the beginning these conversations were a bit uncomfortable and ridiculous, as you may imagine.

I could not stop reading 'Just one of the boys'. Everything flows so well and the plot never lets you down as you read page after page. There is always something important happening, a conversation, a fight, a revelation or even a kiss (winks). The only one thing that did not convince me was the reencounter between the protagonists. I wish Leah Rooper and Kate Rooper had given us some more details regarding their feelings or thoughts. Not just an I-forgive-you scene. 

To summarise, this is a wonderful YA story that I am sure everybody will love. It has romance, action, lies, and a Mulan-like protagonist. What else do you want? Furthermore, it has a handsome and rebellious boy that desperately needs to open up to or he will be lost. Give it a try!

Recibí una copia de esta novela gracias a Entangled Teen, así que antes que nada quiero agradecerles por ello.

Este libro me tuvo completamente enganchada a sus páginas. La protagonista es una chica dura de verdad y eso me ha gustado. Estoy un poco cansada de esos personajes femeninos que aseguran ser fuertes e independientes y luego, cuando deberían ser capaces de valerse por sí mismas, son rescatadas por el héroes de la historia (qué sorpresa). En este caso, Alice no lo necesita. Ella es su propia heroína y me encantó precisamente por eso. Alice es peligrosamente sincera y apasionada, cualidades que en determinados momentos podrían meterla en algún lío pero, nuevamente, ella puede manejarlo. O no, pero al menos se hace responsable de las consecuencias como una adulta.

No hay nada más importante para ella que el hockey, así que cuando no la aceptan en los Chicago Falcons sólo porque es una chica, Alice decide que tal vez ha llegado la hora de rendirse. Sin embargo, su hermano gemelo Xander tiene un accidente y ya no puede jugar para este equipo. Va a perderse su única oportunidad para demostrar de lo que está hecho... por esa razón, Alice sugire hacerse pasar por él. La gente no suele ser capaz de diferenciarlos, y esta vez no será una excepción. Alice se corta el pelo, se pone una venda alrededor del pecho y ahí va. Un nuevo y más talentoso Xander Bell pisa el hielo. Pero sigue habiendo un problema: Hayden Tremblay. Alice nunca había prestado atención a los chicos sudorosos; de hecho, está más que acostumbrada a hacerles morder el polvo pero Tremblay... ella no puede ignorarle.

Lo que más me gustó de esta novela es la relación que existe entre Al Bell (Alice disfrazada como Xander) y Hayden, y también la poderosa unión entre los gemelos. Al le cambia la vida a Hayden de formas que ni siquiera me habría imaginado. Sus conversaciones son profundas y cargadas de sentimientos, y de repente me di cuenta de que me encantaba esta pareja y me había olvidado por completo de Alice como chica. He reído, he sufrido y he sonreído gracias a la pareja, lo cual es bastante complicado si tenemos en cuenta que Alice tiene que fingir SER un chico para que no la descubran. Los chicos y las chicas tenemos diferentes códigos y maneras de hablar, así que al principio sus conversaciones eran un poco incómodas y ridículas, como os podéis imaginar.

No pude parar de leer Just one of the boys. Todo fluye muy bien y el argumento no defrauda en ningún momento mientras pasas las páginas. Siempre hay algo importante sucediendo, ya sea una conversación, una pelea, una revelación o incluso un beso (guiño). La única pega que le pongo es que no me convenció el reencuentro entre los protagonistas. Me hubiese gustado que Leah y Kate Rooper nos hubiesen dado más detalles con respecto a sus sentimientos o pensamientos. Quería saber qué pasaba por la cabeza de Alice y de Hayden. Pero al final sólo me quedé con una escena de 'te perdono todo'.

En resumidas cuentas, esta es una magnífica historia Young Adult que estoy segura de que enamorará a cualquiera. Tiene romance, acción, mentiras, y una protagonista que me recuerda a Mulan. ¿Qué más queréis? Asimismo, tiene a un chico muy guapo y rebelde que necesita desesperadamente abrirse a alguien o terminará perdido. ¡Dadle una oportunidad!
